🌷 Growing Awareness: Honoring Breast Cancer Awareness Month at Verdant Lyfe
At Verdant Lyfe, we believe that care and growth go hand in hand — whether it’s nurturing your plants or taking care of yourself. As a woman-owned business, this October holds deep meaning for us as we join the world in recognizing Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
This month is about more than wearing pink — it’s about education, early detection, and empowerment. It’s about reminding every woman (and man) to pause and nurture the most important life they have: their own.
🌿 Understanding the Importance of Early Detection
Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting women worldwide, but when caught early, it’s also one of the most treatable. Regular screenings and self-examinations can make all the difference.
Early detection doesn’t just save lives — it gives people the power to take control of their health.
🌸 How to Perform a Self-Examination
Here’s a simple, at-home guide you can do once a month — ideally a few days after your period ends, when breasts are least likely to be swollen or tender.
-
Look:
Stand in front of a mirror with your shoulders straight and your hands on your hips. Look for changes in size, shape, or color, and watch for dimpling, puckering, or redness. -
Raise & Inspect:
Raise your arms and look for the same changes. -
Check for Fluid:
Gently squeeze each nipple to check for discharge (this could be milky, yellow, or bloody). -
Feel While Lying Down:
Use the pads of your fingers in small circular motions, covering the entire breast from top to bottom and side to side. Don’t forget the area up to your collarbone and into your armpit. -
Feel While Standing or Sitting:
Many find this easier in the shower. Move your hand in small circles, checking the same way as above.
If you notice anything unusual — a lump, swelling, or change in skin texture — schedule a visit with your healthcare provider right away.
🌺 Preventative Care: Nurture from Within
Just like plants thrive with the right care, your body flourishes with balance and attention.
Here are a few preventative steps that can support your overall wellness:
-
Eat a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins.
-
Stay active — even light exercise helps reduce risk factors.
-
Limit alcohol and avoid smoking.
-
Schedule regular checkups and mammograms (starting at age 40 or earlier if you’re high risk).
-
Practice self-love — stress management, mindfulness, and rest are key to overall health.
