This version is green on the outside and can get a nice red coloring on the inside. A cool little bug-eating live plant it is one of the "fastest" reacting and moving plants on earth. Similar to most plants the Venus Flytrap gathers nutrients from the air and soils, but since they adapted to a poor soil environment they gathered nutrients from trapping insects. It attracts bugs with its sugary syrup and once the trigger hairs get bent it will close on the prey and has a digestive enzyme to convert that prey into fertilizer. The Venus Flytrap belongs to the carnivorous plants native to subtropical wetlands on the East Coast USA. It loves being in a pot full of damp sphagnum moss and can handle bright to part-shade lighting. The traps range in size from 1/16 inch to an inch long or longer depending on the plant.

Black traps?! Don't worry, there are a number of reasons and it may be part of the natural cycle of a trap that has already digested plenty. If you have received yours and some of the traps have turned black you can just pick them off. So long as the plant is continuing to put out new growth to replace the old traps you can remove all the dead parts as this is part of the normal part of the plant's lifecycle.

These bog-loving plants do best when kept in a humid environment and only given distilled or rainwater.

If all the traps are turning black then it can be due to poor lighting or water problems. Venus Flytraps prefer distilled or rain water.  Tap or bottled water that often has high levels of dissolved minerals can burn the plant's roots. Adding fertilizer to the soil will hurt the plant, they need nutrient-poor soil. Since they like high humidity, a terrarium is frequently a preferred home for them.

Available in the following packaging based on your preference:

  • Nursery Pot - Standard plastic 2-inch planter pot that can be placed inside a larger pot or left as is until it outgrows it.
  • Diana Planter - This plant comes packaged in a white round porcelain planter pot ready for your home or office space with a bamboo tray to catch drips when watered.

If your plant needs added humidity our Plant Mister would make a perfect addition to your plant shelf for both function and beauty.

Venus fly trap.

This plant arrived looking very poor to start. It seemed to be too soaked and almost soggy (the plant iteself) . It still looks bad which is a huge disappointment because I was loving the idea of a carnivorous plant. Upon arrival is the photo with black butter dish in background and the other was today, 2 weeks later

Disappointing, Already dying

When the plan arrived the packaging had me excited to open and see a beautiful plant, instead I found a soggy, wilted Venus Fly trap. It is already dying despite following the care instructions. It was a Christmas gift and it was very disappointing.

Venus fly trap

My plant came looking quite sad. I reached out with pics and stating my concerns. The response I got was it looks good follow instructions. I am following instructions given, and it still looks a bit sad. But last interaction does not make me feel hopeful I will get any different response. Hopefully it survives.

Arrived partially damaged. Hasn’t really grown since and that was months ago. Pretty disappointed in the quality.
