🌱 Plant Care Instructions

☀️ Light:

Guzmania ‘Melissa’ thrives in bright, indirect light. Place it near a window where it receives plenty of filtered natural light. It can tolerate partial shade, but avoid prolonged direct sunlight, which can scorch its leaves and fade its colorful flower bracts.

💧 Watering:

Watering is especially important for Guzmania because, unlike many traditional houseplants, this bromeliad has a natural water reservoir!

The center of the plant forms a cup, also called a rosette or tank, where water collects naturally. This is where you should focus most of your watering.

How to water properly:

  1. Pour fresh, preferably filtered or rainwater, directly into the central cup of the plant.

  2. Keep the cup partially filled with fresh water, checking it regularly.

  3. Every 1–2 weeks, gently empty the old water and refill with fresh water. This prevents stagnant water and bacterial buildup.

  4. Lightly water the soil when the top layer begins to dry. The roots should never sit in soggy soil.

  5. Make sure your planter has proper drainage and never allow excess water to collect at the bottom.

Important: Avoid allowing the central cup to remain filled with old, stagnant water. Refreshing the water regularly is essential to keeping your Guzmania healthy!

🌡️ Humidity:

As a tropical plant, Guzmania appreciates moderate to high humidity. Average household humidity is generally manageable, but it will appreciate occasional misting or a nearby humidifier, especially in drier indoor environments.

🌡️ Temperature:

Prefers warm indoor temperatures between 60–85°F. Keep away from cold drafts, air conditioning vents, and sudden temperature changes.

🌱 Soil:

Use a loose, airy, well-draining bromeliad or orchid potting mix. A combination of orchid bark, perlite, and a light potting mix works well. Avoid dense soil that holds too much moisture.

🌿 Growth:

Guzmania is a slow-growing, upright bromeliad that forms a beautiful rosette of arching green leaves. After flowering, the mother plant will gradually decline, but don't worry! It can produce new baby plants called pups around its base. These pups can eventually be separated and grown into new plants.

✨ Mature Size:

Approximately 12–18 inches tall, depending on growing conditions.

🌸 A Little Something to Know About Its Bloom:

Guzmania bromeliads typically flower once during their lifetime. The colorful flower bracts can remain beautiful for months. Once the bloom fades, the original plant will gradually decline as it produces new pups. With patience and proper care, you can grow these baby plants into the next generation of beautiful bromeliads!

🐾 Pet Friendly:

Yes! Guzmania is Pet Safe and considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a wonderful tropical addition to pet-friendly homes.

Whether you're treating yourself or surprising someone special, Guzmania ‘Melissa’ is a beautiful way to bring tropical color, personality, and a little happiness into any space.
